Actual Budget is a free, open-source budgeting application built around envelope budgeting: allocating the money you have to bills, everyday spending and future goals. Unlike many commercial budgeting apps, Actual doesn't require an expensive subscription.
Where it gets trickier is when you want to use Actual in your browser without installing anything, or keep your budget in sync between devices like your laptop and your phone. For that, you need a sync server. You can run one yourself, but you're responsible for keeping it running, installing updates and backing up your data.
Quarterday takes care of all that for you, with plans starting at £24/year. No server setup or maintenance.
To keep subscription costs even lower, you can share your subscription with other members of your household. Everyone on the plan can have their own private budgets.
You can also collaborate with other Quarterday users on a shared budget file, even if they’re not part of your household group.
Actual Budget is designed as a local-first application. Your budget lives on your device, and you can keep using it offline. You use Quarterday to sync between devices and back up your budgets.
You're not locked into Quarterday. You can move your budget to another Actual server whenever you want, including one you run yourself.
Quarterday also supports Actual's optional end-to-end encryption. With encryption enabled, Quarterday can't read the contents of your encrypted budget.
